Orion

papua new guinea expeditions

Each day of these expeditions will reveal yet another aspect to the wonderful cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea and the breathtaking scenery unique to this remote land. This is still a land of magic and spirits despite the best efforts of colonial missionaries over the centuries. A land of 800 languages, the cultural diversity will take your breath away. From volcanic tropical fjords and the flooded crater that is Rabaul's Simpson Harbour to pristine white sand beaches, the beauty of PNG is wonderfully varied.

"Remote" is an understatement for our anti clockwise navigation around Papua (previously named Irian Jaya) and over "the birds head" of West Papua. We will, on this "Voyage of Discovery", witness completely mysterious ceremonies blended with the hues of a thousand cultures, from the islands and archipelagos and atolls that stretch from Rabaul, North West through to Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The province contains the highest mountains between the Himalayas and the Andes, rising up to 4884 m high. The vast southern and northern lowlands, stretching for hundreds of kilometres, include lowland rainforests, extensive wetlands, savannah grasslands, and some of the largest expanses of mangrove forest in the world. Around the tip we visit Raja Ampat, an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands. We then sail south to Maluku, a rarely visited group of islands.
